Every year, The Genesis School scholars in grades 3–8 take on a capstone project — a hands-on service learning experience that asks one big question: How can I make my community better?
For families across Greater Cleveland, it is one more way Genesis prepares scholars not just for college-prep high school, but for life. Here is how the capstone works and why it matters.
What Is a Capstone Project?
A capstone project is a year-long, real-world project that scholars complete in small groups. Instead of working alone on a worksheet, scholars work together to solve a real problem in their own neighborhood.
The goal is simple: find a way to improve the local community, then do the work to make it happen. Scholars get to choose what matters most to them, which is what makes the project meaningful.
Real-World Service Learning
Through the capstone, scholars partner with local organizations and give their time to causes they care about – true community service in action.
Service learning opportunities can include:
- Volunteering with Meals on Wheels
- Helping out at a local animal shelter
- Supporting a neighborhood food bank
- Cleaning up shared spaces in the community
Because scholars pick their own focus, they stay invested from the first day to the final presentation.
The Skills Scholars Build
The capstone is joyful, but it is also rigorous. Along the way, scholars build the kind of skills that carry them through high school, college, and beyond:
Research — learning how to study a problem before solving it
Problem-solving — turning a big idea into a real plan
Communication — working as a team and speaking up
Presentation — sharing their work with confidence
These are exactly the skills top high schools and colleges look for.
How the Capstone Grows With Each Scholar
The capstone grows right along with your scholar. A third grader and an eighth grader will not do the same project — and that is by design.
In the younger grades, scholars respond to guided questions about their project. By eighth grade, scholars complete a short essay and present their work.
Every project connects back to the Genesis tenets: Resilience, Respect, and Responsibility. Scholars reflect on what the work taught them and how they can carry those lessons into everyday life.
At Genesis, scholars are not only prepared for what comes next — they are already leading, right here, right now.
